“It is important for us to have a precise date of entry into the European Union, because without it, Vladimir Putin can block our path for decades,” Zelenski said via video link at the extraordinary plenary session, held on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion, reports HINA.
He also emphasized the need for credible security guarantees to prevent the further spread of Russian aggression in Europe. He warned that, without a clear date and guarantees, Putin will try to divide Europe and slow down Ukraine’s European path.
Zelensky called for the introduction of stronger sanctions against Russia, ending European dependence on Russian energy, closing Russian banks in Europe, preventing the circumvention of sanctions, sanctioning the so-called Russian “shadow fleet” and banning the entry of Russian war criminals into Europe.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, stated that the security of Ukraine is also the security of Europe. After Zelensky, the deputies adopted a resolution that again strongly condemns Russian aggression and demands that Russia immediately stop its military activities, withdraw from the internationally recognized territories of Ukraine, and release prisoners and deported civilians, including children.
The resolution states that Ukraine’s future lies in the EU and recommends accelerating its integration and strengthening support through military, political and diplomatic measures. It also condemns the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia and supports efforts for their return, as well as the expansion of sanctions against those responsible for war crimes.
