Sudan’s defense minister announced on Tuesday that the army would continue fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Force after the country’s Security and Defense Council met to discuss a US ceasefire proposal.
– We thank the Trump administration for its efforts and proposals to achieve peace – said Hassan Kabroun in a speech broadcast on state television, adding that “preparations for the battle of the Sudanese people are underway.”
– Our preparations for war are a legitimate national right – he said after the council meeting in Khartoum.
The details of the US proposal for a cease-fire have not been made public.
The war in which tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced in the last two years has spread to new areas of Sudan in recent days, raising fears of an even greater humanitarian disaster.
After mediating other conflicts in Africa and the Middle East in recent months, the US administration under Donald Trump is now pushing for a ceasefire in Sudan.
Authorities linked to the military rejected an earlier ceasefire proposal that would have excluded them and the paramilitary formations they are fighting against from the transitional political process.
The latest talks follow an escalation on the ground, where RSF paramilitary forces appear to be preparing an attack on the central Kordofan region after capturing al-Fashir, the last military stronghold in the vast Darfur region, AFP reports.
