Turkey is evaluating all aspects of possible measures that could be taken in the event of a conflict between neighboring Iran and the US, a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters on Wednesday.
Iran and the United States earlier this month renewed talks as Washington builds up its military presence in the Middle East. Tehran has threatened to attack US bases in the region if attacked, but Iran’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that a deal with the US was “within reach” if diplomacy took priority.
Turkey, a NATO member that shares a border with Iran to the east, has said it opposes any military intervention against Iran and does not want to destabilize the region. Ankara is in contact with both sides to reduce tensions and has called for a diplomatic solution to the disputes.
– Of course, all aspects of the measures that could be taken in the event of a negative development are being evaluated – said the source, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
– All scenarios are being considered and steps are being taken to ensure the safety of our citizens – he added, stressing that any moves that would “violate the sovereignty of Iran” are “out of the question”.
The source did not provide details on the specific measures Turkey is considering.
Earlier, the Office of the Turkish Presidency for Combating Disinformation denied media reports that Turkey is planning to enter Iranian territory to prevent a possible influx of refugees.
