Turkish authorities detained in Ankara a long-time correspondent of the German state international broadcaster Deutsche Welle, accusing him of “spreading misleading information” and “insulting the president”.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday evening that it had detained Alican Uludag and launched a criminal investigation based on some of his social media posts.
He will be brought before prosecutors on Friday.
Deutsche Welle, or DW, reported that a correspondent who has been working for the station for several years was arrested in Ankara and taken to Istanbul police on Thursday.
DW director-general Barbara Massing called the accusations baseless and said the arrest was “a deliberate act of intimidation and shows how seriously the government is cracking down on press freedom.”
DW said the charges against Uludag relate to his criticism of the Turkish government’s measures that led to the release of suspected ISIS militants in a post on social media platform X that he made about a year and a half ago.
DW added that his apartment was searched and IT equipment was seized, reports Reuters.
