Witnesses said Lin turned pale moments before the incident.
Taiwanese media reported that the episode took place while Tainan lawmaker and mayoral candidate Chen Ting-fei was giving a speech. Lin originally raised his right hand to cover his mouth, but the force of the vomit could not be contained and spread as he turned around, hitting Lai who was standing on his right.

Lai, a former doctor, immediately came over to check Lin’s condition and helped provide initial first aid on the spot. The event was briefly halted while staff paid attention to hygiene and safety.
Afterwards, addressing the crowd, Lai explained that members of Lin’s family had recently contracted the norovirus, and it was possible that Lin was also affected. He added that Lin’s condition has stabilized. Later, Lin apologized for the upset, saying that his relatives had recently been infected with norovirus and that he had contracted it himself. He described the incident as unavoidable at the time and expressed regret to those present.
