Adnet’s relationship with Bosnia and Herzegovina began spontaneously. As he said, while he was staying in Croatia, he rented a car and decided to cross the border. “Brother, I fell in love with that place. Passionately. Everything is riddled… They kept the scars of war as a reminder,” Adnet explained, noting that he immediately noticed the traces of recent history visible on the facades of the buildings.
Connoisseur of political situations
What particularly surprised his interlocutors was Adnet’s detailed knowledge of the complicated political system of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He precisely described the system with three members of the Presidency and the administrative division of the country. At the same time, he emphasized that a large part of the population in the Republika Srpska entity does not support the representation of their own country, but rather the neighboring Serbia. That is precisely why, he noted, the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina is predominantly a symbol and representative of Bosniaks.
As a big football fan, Adnet got personally acquainted with the Bosnian fans, known as BH Fanaticos, during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Delighted by their organization, he followed the BiH national team, known as the Dragons, at matches.
He was in the stands in Cuiaba at the match against Nigeria, for which he still claims today: “We were robbed against Nigeria!” The friendships he made then with the fans from Bosnia and Herzegovina continue to this day, and Adnet says that they accepted him wonderfully and made him feel like a part of the team.
Empathy for the victims of war
The Brazilian actor showed exceptional respect and sympathy for the suffering of the people in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He clearly named those responsible for the crimes, mentioning Slobodan Milošević, Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić and their intention to commit genocide.
“It’s a country that suffered so much. Those people really wanted genocide against the Bosnian people… That’s why today, when some kid, some Bajraktarević or Alajbegović, scores a goal, it has a special weight. Those guys, according to their plan, shouldn’t have existed, they were destined to disappear,” explained Adnet emotionally. For him, the performance of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the World Cup was the greatest expression of Bosnian culture for the whole world.
Delighted by the music and hospitality
Speaking of the people, Adnet described Bosnia and Herzegovina as a forgotten and impoverished country by European standards, but also as a place where extremely warm and hospitable people live. He also shared an anecdote from a restaurant. When he asked the waiter if they had a CD with Bosnian music, he got a negative answer.
However, the waiter left the restaurant and returned half an hour later with a USB stick on which he recorded his music, refusing to take money for it. That gesture, as well as the culture itself, encouraged him to fall in love with Bosnian music. To the surprise of the podcast host, Adnet sang the song “In Istanbul on the Bosphorus” in the studio, accurately pronouncing the verses containing Islamic motifs.
