Israel’s military body in charge of coordinating aid to Gaza (COGAT) said limited movement of people would be allowed, subject to strict security checks. Israel and Egypt will jointly control passengers, while surveillance will be carried out by agents of the European Union border mission.
The reopening of the Rafah crossing is considered an important step in the Gaza ceasefire plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. The crossing, which is Gaza’s main exit to the outside world, has been largely closed since May 2024.
Palestinians who left Gaza during the war will be allowed to return, but only after receiving an Israeli security clearance. Israel had previously refused to reopen the crossing, but the process resumed after the body of the last hostage was returned from Gaza earlier this week.
