At least 87 people died in a powerful snowstorm that hit the United States in recent days, from Texas to New Jersey, reports CBS. More than 174,000 homes and businesses, mostly in Mississippi and Tennessee, were left without power, while in Nashville alone, about 41,000 people were affected by power outages. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has asked for a clear timeline for power restoration.
Snow and icy precipitation caused major disruptions in traffic: more than 2,400 flights were canceled, and the cruise ship “Carnival” ended its journey early due to weather conditions. In New York, subway cables fell due to low temperatures, damaging parked cars, while crews work to clear the snow. In Washington, the National Guard is engaged in removing snow and ice from school buildings.
