President Vladimir Putin said Sunday that developing Russia’s nuclear forces is now an “absolute priority” following the expiration of the last remaining nuclear deal with the United States.
– The development of the nuclear triad, which guarantees Russia’s security and ensures effective strategic deterrence and the balance of forces in the world, remains an absolute priority – Vladimir Putin said in a video message.
His speech came on Russia’s “Defenders of the Fatherland Day,” a holiday that is an occasion for military pomp and patriotism promoted by the Kremlin.
Vladimir Putin promised to continue “strengthening the army and navy” and to use military experience from the almost four-year conflict in Ukraine.
All branches of the armed forces will be upgraded, he said, including their “combat readiness, mobility and ability to operate in all conditions, even the most difficult.”
Vladimir Putin’s remarks came just two days before the fourth anniversary of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, which set off a war that destroyed cities, displaced millions and claimed many lives on both sides.
Moscow and Washington – the world’s two major nuclear powers – are no longer bound by any arms control treaty since the New START treaty expired earlier this month.
However, Russia has indicated that it will continue to act “responsibly” regarding its strategic nuclear capability and respect the limits of its arsenal.
