Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, resigned Monday during a farewell address to the nation, ending the term of the interim government and handing over power to a newly elected administration.
The 85-year-old Nobel Prize winner announced that the interim government was ending its mandate, but stressed the importance of preserving democratic values.
– Today the interim government is stepping down – Yunus said. “But let the practice of democracy, freedom of speech and fundamental rights that has begun not be stopped.”
In his address, Yunus emphasized the need to continue the democratic process and protect the fundamental rights of citizens in the new political phase of the country.
