FIFA initiated, and IFAB unanimously accepted, two significant changes to football rules that will start to be applied already at the upcoming World Cup.
According to the British Times, the decision was made at a special meeting in Vancouver, and was confirmed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the institution responsible for making and amending the rules of the game.
It caused the greatest interest new ruleinformally called “Lex Vinicius”. It stipulates that every player who during the game will covers the mouth in order to say something to the opponent automatically win red card.
With this measure, FIFA seeks to suppress hidden insults, provocations and potentially inappropriate communication on the field, which is otherwise difficult to monitor.
President of FIFA Gianni Infantino he announced this measure even earlier, and now it has been officially introduced. The occasion for its adoption was an event in February during the match between Benfica and Real Madrid in the Champions League, in which Vinicius and Gianluca Prestianni participated.
That’s the incident sparked a debate about communication between players and ways to hide spoken words from cameras, which FIFA decided to regulate with a new rule. The new rules will be applied already at the World Cup, which starts in a month and a half, so the players will have to quickly adapt to the new circumstances on the field.
This represents another step by FIFA towards stricter supervision of events on the field and the effort to make football more transparent and “cleaner” in communication.
