The Kremlin said on Tuesday that it had heard no word from India about suspending purchases of Russian oil, after US President Donald Trump said New Delhi had agreed to end such purchases as part of a trade deal with Washington.
US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he had reached a trade deal with India, cutting US tariffs on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent, in exchange for India ceasing purchases of Russian oil and reducing trade barriers.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is carefully analyzing Trump’s statements on relations with India.
When asked directly whether India has decided to stop buying Russian oil, Peskov replied: “So far we have not heard any statements from Delhi on this issue.”
– We respect the bilateral relations between the United States of America and India – Peskov told reporters. “But we attach equal importance to the development of an advanced strategic partnership between Russia and India.
– That is the most important thing for us – he added, “and we intend to continue developing our bilateral relations with Delhi.”
India has become the biggest buyer of Russian crude shipped by sea at discounted prices after Moscow launched a war in Ukraine in 2022. This caused negative reactions from Western countries, which imposed sanctions on the Russian energy sector with the aim of reducing Moscow’s income and making it more difficult to finance the war.
