In an interview with the German Bild, the legendary coach spoke about his expectations, favorites and the way he will follow the competition.
Klopp sees a wide range of contenders for the title in this championship. Among them he includes the German national team, for which he says that “everything is possible”. However, he immediately added that “I could list ten other national teams that also have great chances”. He explained that success requires luck, avoiding injury and genuine team quality.
Asked to name the main candidates, he mentioned “world powers like Argentina, France, Spain and England, along with the Netherlands.” As a possible surprise, he pointed out Portugal, but also Norway, which he believes has a “golden generation” led by Erling Haaland. Despite this, the 58-year-old expert refused to narrow down his choice to just three names.
When asked if he would like to watch a game of the World Cup relaxed and unnoticed in a cafe, the former manager of Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund was clear. “Unnoticed? It would be nice, but it’s never going to happen,” Klopp said, adding: “I’m most looking forward to the Scotland-Brazil game. It will be fascinating because two completely different football philosophies collide.”
Speaking about the teams that could surprise, Klopp advised: “I think you have to watch out for the British teams. If they prepare for the tournament properly, they can go far. They have a good generation of players.”
He did not stop at England, led by Thomas Tuchel. “Scotland can hurt their opponents in many ways, they have a good team. However, in the end, only the biggest favorites will remain until the quarter-finals anyway,” he concluded. The World Cup begins on June 11 with a match between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa, and the final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
