The situation that caused a lot of controversy across Europe did not go down well with one of Bayern’s key players, Joshua Kimmich, who did not hesitate to criticize the referee’s decision and the rule itself.
“I haven’t looked at the situation again, but it’s more of a ‘pure accident.’ It’s just not in the spirit of the game,” Kimmich said after the game.
The Bayern midfielder also referred to an older game, pointing out the inconsistency of the criteria when it comes to playing with the hand.
“We played in Madrid eight or nine years ago – then I wish we had won a penalty like this. It’s frustrating, because there is no opponent behind you to take advantage of it,” said the German representative.
Kimmich believes that the current rules affect the outcome of big games too much and should be adjusted.
“I think the rule could be adjusted, so that not every handball in the penalty area is a penalty. The ball can hit you in the hand after the knee, and the penalty for that can be decisive in the semi-finals of the Champions League,” concluded Kimmich.
