US President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that “very bad things are going to happen” if a deal is not reached to resolve the long-standing dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.
“I am pleased to confirm that US-Iranian talks should be held in Geneva this Thursday, with a positive initiative to take a step further towards reaching an agreement,” said the Omani foreign minister, who is mediating indirect talks between Washington and Tehran.
Iranian President Masoud Mezeshkian expressed cautious optimism in a post on Xu yesterday, saying recent talks had “produced encouraging signals” while pointing to Tehran’s readiness for “any potential scenario.”
Indirect negotiations have so far failed to produce an agreement, primarily due to tensions over US demands that Iran give up uranium enrichment on its soil, which Washington sees as a path to a nuclear bomb. Iran has denied that it is developing such weapons.
The US joined Israel in targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities in June last year, effectively curbing Iran’s uranium enrichment, while Trump said key nuclear facilities were “destroyed”.
But it is believed that Iran still possesses stocks of previously enriched uranium, which Washington wants to get rid of, reports Hina.
