The fatal incident occurred in the northern part of Renza, near the main highway and the industrial zone. Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle before the crash and explosion.
The Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The truck was owned by the local gas company Gasco, which has yet to comment on the incident.
Dramatic footage circulating on social media shows towering flames and thick smoke billowing from the blast site. Firefighters stated that the explosion was felt within a radius of 150 to 200 meters and that it damaged at least 50 vehicles.
Chile’s president, Gabriel Boric, said debris from the explosion hit three nearby businesses, but there were no reports of widespread damage to the facilities.
The governor of the Santiago Metropolitan Region, Claudio Orrego, said five people were in serious condition. “One person has burns over 100% of his body and his life is in immediate danger,” Orrego said.
