Guardiola: We no longer have everything in our hands

Pep Guardiola’s team played 3:3 away to Everton in the 35th round of the Premier League and thus handed control of the race to Arsenal, who now have five points more with a game in hand.

City took the lead with a wonderful goal by Jeremy Doku at the end of the first half, but the continuation brought a complete reversal. Through Thiern Barry, Jake O’Brien and Barry again, Everton reached 3:1, and Guardiola’s team seemed to be falling apart.

However, City avoided defeat until the end. Erling Haaland reduced the deficit after a great assist from Mateo Kovačić, and Doku scored his second goal in stoppage time for the final 3:3

After the game, Guardiola tried to remain calm, but clearly acknowledged how hard this draw was a blow.

“We played very well. We were outstanding in the first half, really very good. In the second, they raised the level, and maybe we weren’t aggressive enough. We conceded a goal, and after that they turned the game into a real English fight – very aggressive, especially in duels. But in general, we played very well,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

He especially praised the first half.

“It was more difficult for them to break through us than we did them. We were outstanding. We often reached the end line, shot and created chances. It’s not easy against a team that defends well with ten players behind the ball and then goes into transition. We take the point and until it’s over, we’ll keep fighting,” he added.

When asked if he was satisfied with the team’s reaction after the 3:1 deficit, he answered:

“It’s better than losing. It shows what kind of team they are”.

And then he admitted the most important thing:

“It’s not in our hands anymore. It was before, now it’s not. We still have games to play. We’ll see what happens.”
