From 2026, the Health Insurance Institute of the Zenica-Doboj Canton will introduce direct funding for PET/CT diagnostics, which represents a significant step forward in the diagnosis and monitoring of malignant diseases.
In this way, patients will be able to perform tests at the expense of mandatory health insurance, without additional financial burden and complex administrative procedures.
Contracts for the provision of PET/CT services were concluded with the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo and the Vitalis Mostar Polyclinic, following a public procurement procedure.
Insured persons will be able to perform PET/CT diagnostics based on the Decision of the Commission for the approval of treatment outside the canton area, while meeting all medical and administrative prerequisites.
After obtaining the decision, the patient reports to the doctor of family medicine, who issues a referral to a contracted healthcare facility.
At the same time, the decision of the Management Board of the Institute remains in force according to which insured persons who perform PET/CT diagnostics in health institutions with which the Institute does not have a contract have the right to reimbursement of costs, in accordance with prescribed procedures.
It is important to point out that in January 2026, the amount of funds with which the Institute will co-finance PET/CT diagnostics has been increased, namely: 2,649.60 KM for low-dose scan, 2,701.60 KM for scan with contrast and 2,545.60 KM for FDG PET/CT without contrast.
With this increase, the amounts are harmonized with the federal tariff, which further strengthens the financial support for patients and ensures equal treatment of insured persons of the Zenica-Doboj Canton.
