Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries responded to Trump’s State of the Nation address, calling the past year of his presidency “a total disaster.”
“For nearly two hours tonight, Donald Trump spewed lies, propaganda, and hate. After breaking his promise to lower spending on day one, Trump has made life more expensive than ever, taken away health care from the American people, and unleashed state-sponsored violence against our communities,” Jeffries said.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer agreed with those assessments, saying that “Americans have never seen a State of the Nation address so disconnected from reality.”
“President Trump told lie after lie in a nearly two-hour speech, trying to cover up an equally long list of his failures and broken promises,” Schumer said, adding that “Americans are not fooled by that rhetoric.”
Texas Democrat Al Green, who was earlier removed from the chamber after holding up a sign that read “Black people are not monkeys,” said he thought Trump now “got the message.”
“Tonight I wanted someone to confront him personally and let him know that black people are not monkeys and that black people are not going to tolerate this kind of behavior,” Green told C-SPAN, adding that he refuses to tolerate “this level of hate that the president is actually turning into policy.”
Green’s caption was in reference to a racist video posted by Trump in which the first black president of the United States, Barack Obama, was depicted as a monkey.
Texas lawmaker says Trump has become a person who thinks he is above the law.
“He doesn’t recognize the separation of powers, he doesn’t recognize the legal process, he doesn’t believe that judges can make decisions that are contrary to his views and still be right,” Green said and concluded:
“If we allow this to continue, the Constitution will become meaningless.”
