Arteta furious after the drama in Madrid: Well, it’s against the rules…

At the center of his reaction was a referee’s decision that could have a big impact on the return.

‘I talked to the players and tried to understand the situation with the penalty that was canceled for the second goal. It’s against the rules and I don’t understand the decision. I’m very disappointed,’ said Arteta and added:

‘There is clear contact, the referee has made a decision and you can’t overturn it after watching it 13 times. It just doesn’t make sense.’

When asked if the referee was influenced by the reactions from the Atlético bench, Arteta did not want to enter into speculation:

‘I don’t know. That is a question for him. But the decision is wrong and changes the course of the game.’

Unlike the disputed situation in favor of Arsenal, Arteta had no objections to the penalty awarded to Atletico:

‘That’s the rule and they’ve been consistent there. I have nothing to say about that decision. What I have to say about is our penalty.’

Despite the anger, Arteta also sees positive things:

‘There are a lot of good things we have done. We knew we would have difficult moments, especially because of their home performance.’

He also added that Arsenal is still in a good position:

‘We are in an incredible situation. We are playing a return game in front of our fans and everything is in our hands.’

Finally, he briefly referred to the next match in the championship:

‘We have to make sure the players rest, eat well and are ready for the next challenge.’
