Organized by the Varteks Varaždin Kayak and Canoe Club, this traditional sports event once again confirmed its international importance, since it was also scored as a Central European championship. Competitors from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina performed on the demanding course, demonstrating a high level of readiness and competitive spirit.
Special attention was attracted by the performance of young Issa Halilović from Bosanski Novi/Novi Grad, a member of the “ADA” Kayaking Club, who won second place in the U16 category in extremely strong competition. This is an athlete who has just stepped into this age category, although he is not yet 15 years old, but he already has notable results on the domestic and regional stage.
According to his grandfather Fikret Halilović, Issa was the champion at all levels of competition in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the champion and vice-champion of the Balkans, thus confirming the status of one of the most promising young kayakers in the region.
– This is his first year in the U16 category, and he is already competing with seniors and achieving top results. Now he is also entering the Central European scene. He achieves all this without systemic support from the local community and the state. The question arises as to how long our talents will flourish due to the negligence of the authorities – Fikret Halilović pointed out.
He also reminded that last year Issa was not declared an athlete of Novi Grad, despite being the champion and vice-champion of the Balkans, while in earlier years he received recognition for poorer results, when he was the entity and state champion.
Despite the lack of adequate institutional support, the young competitor continues to achieve success and worthily represent his club, city and country on the international stage, confirming that talent and perseverance can overcome numerous obstacles.
