Youth internet is most often used for correspondence and banking, and older for video calls

In the world that almost completely moved to digital business, learning and communication, it is difficult to imagine that as many as 33.4 percent of Bosnia and Herzegovina still does not have a computer. Although digital transformation changes the way we live and work, a large number of BiH citizens remain outside that process.

According to the research of the BiH Agency for BiH, 66.6 percent of households have a computer, while 33.4 percent does not have it at all. Differences are visible in urban and rural areas, and economic status plays a key role in accessing computers and the Internet. In households with revenues greater than 2500 km, as much as 87.5 percent owns a computer, while in lower revenue households, this number drops to 48.3 percent.

While internet access is slightly better – 81.6 percent of households have an internet connection, differences are still present, especially in rural areas, where 82.7 percent of households online. The use of the Internet also depends on age, with people older than 65 that the Internet mainly use for video calls, while younger generations use applications like Viber and WhatsApp.

These data clearly indicate that access to digital technologies is not evenly distributed among BiH citizens. Socio-economic factors, age and place of residence remain significantly affecting digital involvement. To enable equal access to digital tools, it is crucial to find ways to spread digital literacy and availability of technology all layers of society, writes Black Chronicle.
