An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane crashed on Wednesday near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan, and initial reports suggest there are survivors, media reported citing a statement from the Kazakh Ministry of Emergency Situations.

According to available information, six passengers survived the accident. The Azerbaijan Airlines plane was flying from Baku, Azerbaijan to Grozny, Russia, but was diverted due to fog. It crashed near the Aktau airport in western Kazakhstan.

The ministry announced that emergency services are trying to put out the fire at the scene of the accident. Russian news agencies reported that the plane was operated by Azerbaijan Airlines and was flying from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya, but was diverted due to fog in Grozny.

Azerbaijan Airlines announced that there were 72 passengers and crew members on the plane. According to so far unconfirmed reports, six people survived the accident.

A video of the crash appeared on social networks, showing how the plane caught fire upon impact. Emergency services are on the scene trying to extinguish the fire, authorities said.

The Kazakh Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed that emergency services teams are intensively working to put out the fire at the accident site, writes SkyNews. So far, there has been no official statement from Azerbaijan Airlines.
