Indonesia’s Semeru volcano in East Java erupted five times on Wednesday, with volcanic ash reaching up to 1,000 meters above the summit, state media reported.
The first eruption was recorded at 00:28 local time (17:28 GMT on Tuesday), and the column of ash rose about 600 meters above the summit, the Antara news agency reported. The white-gray ash was of medium intensity and moving northward.
The strongest eruption was recorded at 05:36 local time, when ash rose 1,000 meters above the summit and moved northeast, said Liswanto, an official at the Semeru Volcano Observatory.
Gunung Semeru is located on the border of Lumajang Regency and Malang, Jawa Timur.

The last eruption occurred at 08.06, was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and lasted 125 seconds.
Authorities warned residents to avoid activities within 500 meters of the Besuk Kobokan river bank, due to the risk that hot clouds and lava flows could reach up to 17 kilometers from the volcano’s summit.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a zone of frequent seismic activity, and has more than 120 active volcanoes.
