“Hartija has established control over the Kupjansk City Council building. The Hartija search and destroy unit and the Kupjansk tactical group are completing clearing operations in the city, which was unblocked during a successful operation led by the command of the 2nd Corps of the NGU,” the statement said.
The corps also published a video from a GoPro camera, which, they claim, was recorded by the fighters of the 4th brigade of Hartija during the raid on the City Council building. Soldiers from the reconnaissance-strike group raised the Ukrainian flag above the city council in the center of Kupyansk.
“The operation in Kupjansk proves that thanks to planning, the expertise of the commander and staff, and the quality preparation of the units – all that we call the Charter method – it is possible to successfully stop and crush the enemy,” said Colonel Ihor Oboljenski, commander of the 2nd Corps.
Earlier, the Ukrainian army reported that after weeks of grueling fighting, the last Russian strongholds in Kupyansk were collapsing.
“Ukrainian forces are systematically clearing the city in the Kharkiv region, where smaller Russian units have remained trapped without the possibility of reinforcements,” they added.
Viktor Trehubov, head of communications for the Joint Forces Group, said at the time that cleaning up the remaining “pockets” could take up to two more weeks.
“Cleaning in Kupjanska is going quite slowly because civilians remain in the city. Second, it’s urban fighting – it always goes slowly – but the overall situation in the city is developing quite positively,” said Trehubov.
