The Ugandan Communications Commission (UCC) has ordered mobile operators to suspend public internet access from 6pm local time to prevent what it says is ‘disinformation, misinformation, electoral fraud and related risks’, according to a letter seen by Reuters.
Ahead of the election, security forces detained hundreds of opposition supporters, and repeatedly used live ammunition and tear gas at rallies in support of Museveni’s main opponent, popular musician Bobby Wine.
– UCC is aware of the operational challenges that this order may cause and thanks for full cooperation in preserving national stability in this sensitive period – stated in the letter of UCC addressed to licensed mobile operators and internet service providers.
Museveni (81), who came to power in 1986 after a five-year rebellion, is the third longest-serving head of state in Africa.
He has twice amended the constitution to remove term and age limits, and analysts say his complete control over state institutions in Uganda, a country of 46 million people, leaves no realistic prospect of a surprise election.
