U.S. President Donald Trump told a telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin that he would not tighten the sanctions to Russia to prevent the process of resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
“I think there’s a chance now to do something and if I did something like that (expanded sanctions), then it could all be far worse – he said he told reporters in the White House.
He added, however, that the time may come when sanctions will be tightened.
When asked if he believes that Putin wants peace and whether he has trust, Trump replied in the affirmative.
The US president told Putin that “pleasant gentleman”.
“We had a good conversation, I think we made progress,” he said.
Recall, Putin and Trump talked on the phone on Monday, and most of the conversation was dedicated to Ukraine.
According to the Russian president, the phone conversation lasted more than two hours. Putin pointed out that Russia is ready to work together with the Ukrainian side to the Memorandum regarding the future peace agreement.
After the talks, Trump pointed out that he did not introduce new sanctions to Russia because there is a chance to address the Ukrainian crisis.
