Talks with the Iranian delegation were “very good,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, en route to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
“It seems that Iran really wants to reach an agreement,” he said. Trump warned of the consequences if an agreement is not reached and reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.
With the mediation of Oman, the United States and Iran began a new round of negotiations on Friday.
“This was a good start,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later told state television, leaving open the question of whether and when talks would resume.
Until Trump’s comments, the United States had not issued official statements about the outcome of the meeting.
The US president also threatened to impose punitive tariffs against Iran’s trading partners. According to the executive order, tariffs could be imposed on imports into the US from countries that buy or import goods or services from the Islamic Republic. Trump did not name any specific countries, but mentioned 25 percent as an example of a possible tariff rate.
