The Prime Minister of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, Nezir Pivić, and the Minister for Veteran Affairs, Adnan Sirovica, received the delegation of the Majlis of the Islamic Community of Doboj, which consisted of the Chief Imam Ibrahim ef. Halilović, president of the Medžlis Jasmin Hadžikadunić and lawyer of the Medžlis Jasmin Salihbašić.
The topic of the meeting was the implementation of the construction project of the Central Martyr’s Memorial dedicated to the martyrs and civilian victims of the war in the period 1992-1995. in Doboj.
According to the plan, construction will take place in two phases. The estimated value of the first phase is 40,000 KM, while 50,000 KM is planned for the second phase. The names of all Bosniaks killed during the war in Doboj will be written on the memorial, of which there are about 1,000 according to the available records.
It was pointed out that the Mejlis of the Islamic Community of Doboj includes the city of Doboj and the municipalities of Doboj-South, Doboj East and Usora, connecting the areas of two cantons and two entities. To this day, there is no central memorial that would bear witness to the suffering of Bosniaks in this area.
Prime Minister Pivić emphasized that institutional support for the culture of memory and preservation of the truth about the suffering of citizens is a permanent obligation of the government, while Minister Sirovic confirmed that the Ministry of Veteran Affairs will actively participate in the implementation of the project.
The construction of the Central Martyrs’ Memorial, three decades after the end of the war, sends a clear message that the victims will not be forgotten, and that cultivating a culture of remembrance is the foundation of a responsible society.
