The United States on Friday announced new sanctions aimed at curbing Iran’s oil exports, including measures against 14 ships, shortly after the US and Iran concluded talks in Oman.
US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said Iran uses oil revenues to “fund destabilizing activities around the world and increase repression inside Iran.”
– President Donald Trump is committed to reducing illegal exports of Iranian oil and petrochemical products as part of the administration’s maximum pressure campaign – Pigott said in a statement.
The State Department said it would order a freeze on all transactions with 14 ships alleged to be carrying Iranian oil, including vessels registered in Turkey, India and the United Arab Emirates.
It was also announced that sanctions were imposed against 15 legal entities and two individuals.
Since the first Trump administration, the United States has imposed sanctions aimed at forcing other countries to stop buying Iranian oil.
Iran’s foreign minister met indirectly in Oman on Friday with senior representatives of President Trump’s administration regarding Iran’s nuclear program, and said there was a “positive atmosphere.”
The talks are taking place after Iranian authorities have violently suppressed some of the biggest protests since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Trump has previously threatened to use force against Iran, and increased the US military presence near the Iranian coast.
