In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Boston, attorneys for the U.S. Justice Department said the requested documents will help assess whether Harvard is complying with a 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found racially-based college admissions programs unconstitutional.
The Justice Department said it filed the lawsuit “solely to compel Harvard to produce documents relating to any consideration of race in admissions” and “does not accuse Harvard of any discriminatory conduct, nor does it seek monetary damages or rescission of federal funding.” Harvard representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment, reports Hina.
US President Donald Trump said earlier this month that his administration is seeking $1 billion from Harvard to settle investigations into the school’s policies, after news reports said Trump had dropped his request for payment from the prestigious university.
Harvard has been the central focus of the administration’s broad campaign to tap federal funding to spur change at American universities, which Trump says are plagued by anti-Semitic and “radical leftist” ideologies.
The administration canceled hundreds of grants awarded to Harvard researchers on the grounds that the university had not done enough to curb harassment of Jewish students on its campus, prompting Harvard to sue.
