The healthcare systems in Bosnia and Herzegovina have a historic opportunity to join the Eurotransplant network, a European system that enables fast and efficient exchange of organs for transplantation, and annually coordinates more than 7,000 transplants across Europe.
The bearer of activities in the process of fulfilling the conditions for joining this network is the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina headed by Minister Dubravka Bošnjak, which, as the Ministry points out, has made a significant step forward in fulfilling the prerequisites. However, full membership requires the support of all levels of government, health institutions and the professional public.
The fact that the management of Eurotransplant officially visited the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the first time in November 2025 is encouraging. On that occasion, the draft Teaching and Training Agreement TTA was handed over to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which in practice opens up the possibility of limited inclusion of patients from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the system of organ exchange through partner centers.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has special support from the Republic of Croatia, which is one of the most successful members of Eurotransplant and the European leader in transplant medicine.
According to the data of this international network, from 1995 to the end of 2025, Croatia performed almost 6,000 organ transplants, of which 3,148 kidney transplants, 1,972 liver transplants and more than 600 heart transplants, reports Black Chronicle.
