The slain Pretti was an intensive care physician at a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital, and family members said he genuinely cared about people and was extremely upset about President Donald Trump’s immigration measures in his city.
– Participated in protests following the Jan. 7 killing of Renee Good by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. He cared deeply about people and was very upset by what was happening in Minneapolis and across the United States with ICE, as millions of other people are upset,” his father said, according to the AP.
– He thought it was terrible, kidnapping children and just grabbing people on the streets. He cared about those people and knew that it was wrong, so he participated in the protests – added the murdered man’s father.
For several weeks, Minneapolis has been rocked by protests over the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and their brutality against the population.
Prretia’s violent death came three weeks after the death of Renee Good, also a 37-year-old American, who was shot and killed by an ICE agent in the same city.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the man killed on Saturday was armed with a semi-automatic pistol and “resisted violently before the agent, fearing for his life, shot him.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the “horrific shooting” by federal agents.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a press conference that the slain man was a resident of Minneapolis, had a valid firearms license and was not known to police.
The parents confirmed that Prreti was a US citizen, born in Illinois. Like Good, court records showed he had no criminal record, and his family said he had never had any interactions with law enforcement other than a few traffic violations.
In a recent conversation, his parents, who live in Colorado, told him to be careful when he protests. “We talked to him about two weeks ago, we agreed that he should protest, but he shouldn’t do anything stupid,” his father said.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called on US President Donald Trump on Saturday to end ICE operations in the city.
