The death toll from a landslide that hit Indonesia’s West Java province over the weekend has risen to 17, the country’s disaster relief agency said Monday, with dozens still missing.
The landslide that hit a residential area in the Bandung Barat region early on Saturday was triggered by heavy rains that had started a day earlier, and the weather agency warned that rainfall could continue for another week in the province and several other regions.
The affected village of Pasir Langu is located in a hilly part of the province, about 100 km southeast of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. More than 30 houses were buried by the landslide, the agency said.

At least 17 people have died, agency spokesman Abdul Muhari told Reuters on Monday, while 73 people are still missing.
Indonesia’s navy chief, Muhammad Ali, said on Monday that 23 naval officers were among those captured.
The officers were participating in border patrol training at the time of the landslide, and he added that heavy equipment could not reach the affected area due to bad weather.
The agency said on Sunday that minor landslides along with poor weather conditions also made the search, which requires drones and heavy machinery, difficult.
Spring floods last week hit several parts of Indonesia, including West Java and Jakarta, forcing residents to flee their homes and evacuate to higher ground.
The landslide occurred two months after cyclone-triggered floods and landslides on the island of Sumatra claimed 1,200 lives, destroyed homes and displaced more than a million residents.
