“On Thursday, I spoke with FIFA about American visas. We were asked to hand over all passports to the American embassy in Ankara,” Turkey, where the Iranian national team is currently located, said Mehdi Taj.
“All the passports have been handed over,” confirmed the president of the Iranian Football Association, adding that he was waiting “to see what happens on Friday or Saturday at the latest.”
Iran’s national team is scheduled to fly from Turkey to Spain on Saturday before starting its training camp in Mexico. Passports are required for these flights.
“I think all American visas will be issued and there will be no further problems,” said Mehdi Taj.
Mexico granted visas to Iranians this week. Team Melli, as the national team is called in Farsi, is scheduled to play its first game against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles. They will then face Belgium in Group G on June 21 also in Los Angeles and Egypt on June 27 in Seattle.
