A disaster of unimaginable proportions has befallen Italian football. It’s a shame when such a world football superpower misses even one World Cup, and when they don’t go to the World Cup three times in a row, it’s a definite sign that something, or rather nothing, is wrong.
There is discomfort in the Apennines, and everyone who has Italy close to their hearts in the Boot and in the whole world is in disbelief at the fact that it will be at least another four years before we see the Azzurri again in the biggest competition.
It’s no secret that Italian football has been on a downward trajectory for some time now. Winning the European Championship in 2021 only masked things, it seems. Now is the time to look for culprits and answer some questions, but few propose concrete solutions that should bring improvement for Calcio.
One of those who came out publicly and said what he thinks must be done is Luciano Spalletti. He was named coach of the season in Serie A on several occasions, he did an excellent job in Napoli and Roma, he is one of the most respected Italian experts in recent history.
Spalletti’s idea is as follows:
“Each Serie A club must have at least one player aged 19 or younger on the field at all times,” Spalletti said and explained:
