According to Musk, his aerospace company plans to start building a city on Mars within about five to seven years, although to date no human foot has set foot on Mars, and no manned mission to Mars is planned.
However, the company’s top priority is “ensuring the future of civilization” on the moon, he said.
“Traveling to Mars is only possible when the planets align every 26 months (travel time of six months), while we can launch to the Moon every ten days (travel time of two days),” he wrote on the US-based social network X.
“That means we can iterate much faster to complete a city on the moon than a city on Mars,” he said, adding that building a self-growing city on Mars would take more than 20 years.
Musk is known for making overly optimistic predictions about technology. For example, in 2018 he said that autonomous cars produced by his company Tesla “could probably cross the moon in three months, and six months beyond that.”
And in 2017, he said that SpaceX would transport private citizens around the moon next year.
