The strike comes amid an escalating dispute over workers’ wages in Germany’s federal states. Verdi and the German Association of Civil Servants are demanding a 7 percent salary increase of at least 300 euros. The employers rejected the offer, and the unions accuse them of not submitting an alternative proposal.
The union is calling for a strike at universities tomorrow, and university and research institution employees will join the action in more than 60 German cities. Further warning strikes are expected until the third round of negotiations, which is scheduled to take place from February 11 to 13.
