Bayern coach Vincent Kompany did not hide his displeasure after the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against PSG, which ended in a 1:1 draw.
The German team was defeated 5:4 in the first match, so the draw in Munich was not enough to qualify for the final. Kompany particularly criticized the referee’s decisions and the way the handball rule was interpreted.
He recalled the situation from the first game when a penalty was awarded against Bayern after the ball hit Alphonso Davies first in the thigh and then bounced in the hand.
On the other hand, in the second leg, Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro did not award a penalty for Bayern after the ball hit the outstretched hand of PSG midfielder Joao Neves after Vitinha’s reaction.
“The ball didn’t go from the body to the hand but directly to the hand. It doesn’t matter if it came from a teammate or not. It’s just nonsense,” Kompany told DAZN.
Although the referee acted according to the valid interpretation of UEFA, the coach of Bayern believes that the rule does not make sense.
“Rules are rules. It’s a shame,” added the Belgian expert.
According to the rules of the International Committee of Football Associations, handball is not considered a foul if the ball is hit by a player after an unexpected bounce from a teammate.
Kompany also felt PSG left-back Nuno Mendes should have received a second yellow card for handball.
“Why didn’t Nuno Mendes get a second yellow card for obvious handball? I don’t understand that. Why was a penalty awarded against us in Paris, but not here?” asked the Bayern coach.
He added that he understood the rule, but felt that Mendes’ hand was raised too high.
“I congratulate PSG, but Mendes had to be sent off,” he said.
Kompany pointed out that he is still pained by the penalty awarded in the first match, because he believes that it was this detail that decided the trip to the final.
“In the end, we were eliminated because of a one-goal difference,” he said.

Despite the disappointment, he emphasized that his team must face new challenges.
“I’m not a person who stays in disappointment for long. Let’s move on,” said Kompany.
The Belgian coach also praised PSG’s game, especially their defensive approach in Munich.
“PSG defended brilliantly at crosses. They closed the space behind the defense very well and were very mobile,” he said.
He added that it was the great discipline of the French team that prevented Bayern from creating more serious opportunities. Bayern equalized only in the 94th minute through Harry Kane, but it was not enough to turn the game around.
The Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal will be played on May 30 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
