The number of granted citizenships increased by 54.5 percent compared to 2014, when there were 762,100.
The most new citizenships were granted by Germany (288,700 or 24.5 percent of the total), Spain (252,500 or 21.4 percent) and Italy (217,400 or 18.5 percent).
The majority of new citizens (88 percent) came from outside the EU, while citizens of other member states accounted for 10.6 percent.
Syrians were still the largest group of new EU citizens in 2024, with 110,100 granted citizenships. They are followed by Moroccans (97,100) and Albanians (48,000).
According to the naturalization rate, which shows the number of granted citizenships in relation to the number of foreigners in the country, Sweden recorded the highest rate in the EU – 7.5 per 100 foreign residents.
Italy (4.1) and Spain and the Netherlands (3.9 each) follow. The lowest naturalization rates were recorded in Lithuania (0.1), Bulgaria and Estonia (0.3 each).
