According to him, the decision to block the transit was made in Kyiv, despite the fact that the pipeline is technically ready to resume operation and there are no technical obstacles to resuming deliveries.
In a statement to the Hungarian media, Szijarto stated that it was a political decision of the president Volodymyr Zelenskyassessing that this is intended to make the position of the current Hungarian government more difficult ahead of the elections.
The “Družba” oil pipeline is one of the key routes for the delivery of Russian crude oil to Central Europe, including Hungary, and it passes through the territory of Ukraine. Budapest has previously warned that a possible interruption of transit could have serious consequences for the energy security of the country.
Sijarto also asserted that in this way Kiev is indirectly helping the opposition Tisa party, which will oppose the ruling Fidesz of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the elections. He called the actions of the Ukrainian authorities gross interference in Hungary’s internal political processes.
Despite the accusations, he said that the Hungarian government will ensure a stable supply of energy for citizens and the economy, even if there is a long-term interruption of supplies via “Družba”.
Parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled for April 12, when citizens will elect a new convocation of parliament and indirectly a new government.
