Holocaust survivor Tatiana Bucci will speak today in the European Parliament at a special plenary session on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the European Parliament announced.
Eighty-one years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz, on January 27, 1945, representatives will mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will open the ceremony at noon with a video.
He will then give a speech, followed by a musical performance.
The deputies will be addressed by Tatiana Bucci, who survived the Holocaust.
The commemoration will end with a minute of silence in honor of the victims of the Holocaust and another musical performance.
Tatiana Bucci was born in 1937 in Rijeka, which was then under the control of the Kingdom of Italy.
In 1944, the Nazis arrested her and her family and imprisoned her in the Risiera di San Sabba transit concentration camp in Trieste.
Tatiana was only six years old when she and her four-year-old sister Andra and their mother, aunt, grandmother and cousin were deported to Auschwitz on April 4, 1944.
The sisters spent 10 months in Auschwitz, and Mira’s mother was transferred to Germany for forced labor in a munitions factory.
Their father, Giovanni, was a prisoner of war in South Africa. Tatiana and Andra Bucci are among the youngest children who survived Auschwitz and who have memories of their experience.
After liberation, the sisters were sent to an orphanage, Lingfield House, in southern England.
In December 1946, they were finally reunited with their parents in Italy. The sisters returned to Auschwitz for the first time in 1996.
Tatiana now lives in Belgium with her family.
