Thus, a few months ago, the increased presence of cadmium in the consignment of tomatoes and peppers was recorded, and accordingly their delivery was suspended.
Therefore, the European Food Exchange System (EU RAFF) was reacted, from which the sampling was conducted after the border controls, RFF, notified the discovered 0,056 milligrams per kilogram, which is a potential health risk.
By the way, it is a toxic heavy metal that can accumulate on vegetables through land, water and atmospheric pollution, and the World Health Organization classifies it as carcinogenic, linking it to increased risk of lung cancer, breast and prostate.
According to Dr. Tihomir Predić from the Agricultural Institute of Banja Luka, producers should analyze the land, to operate fertility control, and especially those who export.
“Manufacturers should determine the content of hazardous and harmful substances in soil, because plants adopt it from the land. Otherwise cadmium in the land is in natural form, but it can also be contaminated land, ie. It can be adopted in something on the side, in fertilizers or resources to improve the land, “explains the predic for” independent newspapers “.
As he explained, it is always possible to be an increased presence of this metal, as well as this is nothing alarming, because it all depends on the climatic factors, but also many other reasons.
