At a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, Merz clarified that he would be willing to join the committee only in the context of Gaza, but that he could not participate in the wider body.
“I told Trump a few weeks ago that I would personally be willing to join the Peace Committee if it was the body that, as originally planned, monitors the Gaza peace process, including now in the second phase, which unfortunately has not yet started, which involves the disarmament of Hamas,” Merz said.
He added that for “constitutional reasons” he could not accept the governing structure as envisioned by Trump.
“However, we are ready to consider other, new forms of cooperation with the United States of America if the goal is to find formats that bring us closer to peace in other regions of the world,” added Merz.
Germany thus joined Slovenia and France as European Union countries that have so far rejected Trump’s invitation. From the EU, Hungary and Bulgaria have so far accepted the invitation.
