The Agency for the Water Area of the Sava River (AVP Sava) has issued a notice on the forecast of an emergency hydrological situation for the period from January 25 to 27, warning of possible floods and rising water levels in several parts of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Based on the meteorological forecast of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute of BiH, as well as the analyzed hydrological-hydraulic models within the Water Information System (ISV), a significant increase in water levels is expected due to more abundant precipitation and an increase in temperatures that will lead to snow melting.
The upper parts of the Vrbas and Bosna river basins are particularly at risk, where an extraordinary hydrological situation is forecast, with the possibility of local overflowing of rivers from their beds.
Elevated water levels can also affect tributaries, including the Lašva and Fojnica rivers.
AVP Sava warns that, due to the expected amount of precipitation, torrential flows and urban flooding are possible, especially in Herzegovina, central, southwestern and southeastern Bosnia.
The notification refers to the area of Central Bosnia, Zenica-Doboj and Sarajevo Cantons, and the competent institutions are recommended to monitor the situation on the ground more closely and act in accordance with their powers.
The civil protection services are advised to warn the population about the danger of approaching the river banks due to the increased depth and speed of the water flow, and to promptly inform citizens about self-protection measures.
Current and measured water levels at hydrological stations are available on the website of the Agency for the Sava River Water Area, and all monitoring and notification activities are carried out in accordance with the Federal Operational Plan for Flood Protection.
The Agency notes that the forecast is based on the currently available meteorological data and that any changes in the weather forecast may also affect the predicted hydrological state, it says. Vijesti.ba
