Edin Avdić died suddenly yesterday at the age of 47, and the news of his death caused great sadness throughout the region. We are talking about a sports commentator who for years was one of the recognizable faces and voices of basketball broadcasts in this area.
During his career, Avdić was remembered for his professional approach, but also for his specific commenting style that set him apart among sports journalists. His broadcasts of NBA games made him especially popular among basketball fans.
One of the most famous anecdotes from his work is related to the period when he was engaged on OBN television, where he commented on the NBA league. Then a situation happened that years later became part of the television and sports story in the region.
Ahead of the Western Conference semifinal game between the Utah Jazz and the Los Angeles Lakers, OBN aired the movie “Schindler’s List,” which runs for more than three hours. In order to ensure that the broadcast of the match starts on time, the film was significantly shortened in the editing.
Avdić later jokingly spoke about the situation, explaining that he and the editor took responsibility for shortening the film, which caused numerous reactions from viewers who were not satisfied with the interruption of the broadcast.
– That’s true. We cut that in the editing, and the next day people wrote emails saying that this is a shame, that we are not even able to play the whole film, what kind of Indians we are. Me and the editor cut it, all at my own risk. We always laughed at how in our country the main roles in “Schindler’s List” had the shortest appearance in the history of that film. One of the main characters doesn’t even appear, I canceled him – said Avdić.
This unusual episode has remained one of the most recognizable stories from his career, just like his commentary moments from the basketball floor.
