The Ministry states that a federal court has approved a settlement order ending the proceedings against Disney Worldwide Services and Disney Entertainment Operations.
Disney will pay $10 million in civil penalties to settle allegations by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that the company violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in connection with its YouTube videos.
COPPA prohibits online platforms from collecting, using or disclosing personal information of children under 13 without parental notification and consent.
The government’s lawsuit alleges that Disney failed to properly label its YouTube content as intended for children, leading to targeted advertising and the illegal collection of children’s information.
Assistant US Attorney Brett Shumate said the Department is committed to ensuring that parents have the right to decide how their children’s data is collected and used.
– The Ministry will react quickly to remove any illegal violation of the right of parents to protect the privacy of their children – said Shumate.
Disney’s videos are among the most viewed on YouTube, with billions of views in the United States alone.
In addition to the financial penalty, the order prohibits Disney from operating on YouTube in violation of COPPA provisions and requires the company to establish a compliance program to ensure compliance with child privacy regulations in the future, DPA reports.
