India’s aviation authorities have launched an investigation after the wingtips of two passenger planes touched on the runway at Bombay airport. Air India and IndiGo planes were involved in the incident, which happened last night around 19:30 local time.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Air India plane was in take-off readiness, while the IndiGo plane, after landing, was taxiing on a parallel runway, when the wings came into contact.
Both planes were Airbus A320 and were grounded for technical inspection after the incident. The Air India flight was scheduled for the city of Coimbatore, while the IndiGo plane had previously arrived from Hyderabad.

Both airlines confirmed that there were no injuries in the incident. The passengers were safely evacuated and Air India said that alternative transport was provided for the passengers. IndiGo stated that all passengers disembarked safely after parking the aircraft. Official figures on the number of passengers have not been released, but it is estimated that domestic flights of this type usually carry between 150 and 186 passengers, with six to eight crew members.
The incident in Bombay comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of air traffic safety in India, following a series of technical and operational problems in previous months. Recently, an Air India flight was temporarily grounded in Bengaluru due to a reported technical fault, which was later unconfirmed. Also, in January, an investigation was launched after the engine of an Airbus A350 in Delhi sucked up a cargo container while taxiing on the runway.
The authorities announced that all incidents are being investigated individually, in accordance with prescribed security procedures, recalling the serious plane crash from last year in which, after takeoff, a large number of passengers were killed.
