Moderate socialist Antonio Jose Seguro of the center-left Socialist Party (PS) is beating his far-right opponent Andrea Ventura in the second round of Portugal’s presidential election, according to national television projections based on exit polls.
Projections show Seguro will receive between 67 and 73 percent of the vote, compared to 27 to 33 percent for Ventura.
Seguro is therefore expected to succeed the conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who has held the position for ten years, in early March.
In the first round of voting three weeks ago, Seguro received the most votes, or 31 percent, but was far from the absolute majority needed to win.
