Avalanches in the Italian Alps today claimed at least two lives and injured several others, with rescue operations hampered by strong winds.
The first avalanche hit the southwestern Alpine valley of Maira in the Italian region of Piedmont, near the French border. Local services announced that one person was killed and two were injured, one of whom is in critical condition, reports HINA.
The second avalanche occurred near Pragelato, a popular ski resort about 60 kilometers west of Turin. A 50-year-old mountaineer died in an avalanche in the northeastern Italian region of Veneto, near the town of Recoaro in the Dolomites, the Italian news agency ANSA reports.
The danger of avalanches across the Alps has increased in recent days due to heavy snow and strong winds, which is why warnings are in place for skiers and hikers.
